Rosacea

woman with red face and rosacea

Rosacea is a common, chronic skin condition which commonly presents with; facial redness (usually across cheeks & nose), flushing, widened red veins, papules and pustules. In more severe cases the nose and eyes can also be affected.

Rosacea is more common in women than men, and mostly presents between ages of 45-60. You are more likely to develop rosacea if you are fair skinned, blue eyed & fair haired.

Rosacea is a life long condition and sadly cannot be cured. It can be mild, moderate or severe in nature and everyone's rosacea is slightly different. There are common triggers which may make a persons rosacea 'flair up', they are; hot drinks, stress, spicy food, alcohol, sunlight, extreme temperatures, medications. Often these with rosacea will also report ‘sensitive’ skin, which can be aggravated when using certain skin products. For female sufferers, hormonal changes during menstrual cycle & menopause (including peri & post) can be extremely aggravating for their rosacea.

Whilst rosacea is not curable, there are lots of treatment options available to help manage the presentation & symptoms. Seeking skincare advice from a skin specialist who can tailor a plan to your skin needs is imperative. Use a gentle non - soap based cleansers with warm water and a soft microfibre flannel followed by a light, skin nourishing moisturiser that aids skin barrier repair. Follow with a high quality broad spectrum SPF (minimum factor 30) EVERY SINGLE DAY!! SPF is a rosacea patients best friend- you will need a tube in every bag! My favourite is Intradermology Synergy 6- has a lovely silky finish and leaves no residue.

Avoid skincare products that contain; alcohol, soap, fragrance, urea, menthol and SLS's (sodium lauryl sulphates) as well as micellar water & face wipes.

Rosacea patients are likely to have sensitivities to certain 'active ingredients' such as glycolic acid, retinols & vitamin C's. Your skin specialist will be able to advise on which may work best for you. I am a big fan of azelaic acid (prescription strength) and I offer this to all my rosacea or redness prone clients- it has amazing anti-inflammatory & anti-bacterial properties to help reduce redness.

If you have rosacea you may think that in-clinic skin treatments are not suitable- don't be fooled! There are options we can utilise to help reduce your symptoms- PHFormula resurfacing peels utilise a beautiful blend of gentle acids to reduce the rosacea aggravating microbes & offer a great deal of hydration. Once we have reduced your symptoms to a manageable level with home skincare & a peel system, we can use Thermavein coagulation device to banish to remaining red veins.
