A harmless skin condition, hyperpigmentation is a general term to cover all varieties of skin pigmentation changes that affects the the colour of your skin. Pigmentation can be stimulated by sun exposure, hormonal changes, some medications and injury; all 3 triggers affect the function of melanocytes (skin cells responsible for skin colour), they become over stimulated produces small patches of colour change. ‘Sun spots’ are usually smaller, more superficial areas of colour change whereas melasma tends to cover larger surface area and occur deeper in the skin layers, meaning its often trickier to treat. Most superficial areas of pigmentation can be successfully treated with home skincare, sometimes including prescription options. Chemical peels such as PHformula and microneedling are very effective in- clinic treatments.
